How to Clean Tile Floors

Tile floors offer remarkable beauty and durability, and they’re relatively easy to take care of. Ceramic tiles are made of natural materials that, after being fired in a kiln, become extremely resilient. When glazed, they’re protected against water, dirt and stains, making them even easier to maintain.

If you have ceramic tiles in your home, here’s how to keep them looking their best.

How to Clean Tile Floorstile floor maintenance

When it comes to maintaining tile surfaces, the most important step is cleaning up dirt and spills as soon as they happen. To do so, all you need is a cloth or mop, hot water and a mild household detergent. Spot test the detergent first or check with the manufacturer of your tile for recommendations.

Though they’re low-maintenance, tile floors do need a little bit of TLC. You need to regularly sweep, vacuum and damp mop your floors to prevent dirt and dust from becoming embedded in the grout or the tile itself.

Using a mild detergent is an excellent way to preserve your floor’s shine and color, but one of the best cleaning products for tile is already in your home – hot water. In most instances, you don’t need anything other than water to clean tiled surfaces. If you’re in need of odor elimination, a cup of white vinegar mixed into a gallon of water is very effective.

Don’t Forget the Grout!

Your grout is a key component of your tile floor. When not kept clean and properly maintained, it can become damaged. Damaged grout may allow water to penetrate, leading to mold and mildew growth. It can also crack and cause your tiles to become dislodged.

The best way to prevent grout damage is by having it sealed. Grout sealing prevents stains and prevents water from penetrating your grout.

When your grout becomes dirty, clean it using a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Simply scrub with a toothbrush to eliminate stains.
